Why did Stevie Leave Fleetwood Mac?

Stevie Nicks & Lindsey Buckingham –

Nicks joined the group in 1974 alongside Lindsey Buckingham. Buckingham and Nicks were already dating with an on-and-off relationship. This created turmoil in the band as they were collaborating closely with each other.

Not only was the relationship and tension within the band tight as the couple's relationship was struggling but Buckingham and Nicks would use lyrics that would be a dig at the other person. Some lyrics were meant for playful manners and some with resentment.

Every time these lyrics were sung on stage the other would grow angry. Buckingham and Nicks knew how to push each other's buttons.

By the time the album, Rumours, was finished the couple had broken off their relationship.

Stevie Nicks & Mick Fleetwood –

1977, Nicks falls in love with Mick Fleetwood, who is the founding member of Fleetwood Mac. This complicated things even more as both Nicks and Fleetwood were dating/married to other people.

During Nicks and Buckingham's struggling relationship, Buckingham was concerned that Nicks was cheating on him with Fleetwood. However, the pair immediately said that wasn’t the case, but no one believed them as they continued their affair a few years later.

Their affair ended Fleetwood’s marriage and caused a falling-out between Fleetwood and Buckingham.

Mick Fleetwood & Sara Recor –

After Fleetwood's divorce, he had another affair with one of Nicks’ best friends, Sara Recor.  Nicks in an interview stated that she felt betrayed. She was more hurt over the fact that it was Recor, one of her friends, than the fact that it was with Fleetwood.

After this affair broke news, no one was speaking. Nicks wouldn’t look at Fleetwood and Recor wasn’t allowed in the studio. This created a creative outlet for their music as they poured betrayal, hurt, and heartbreak into their songs.

Eventually, Fleetwood and Recor married, which only lasted seven years and they later divorced.

The Rumors album was currently being written and recorded during these relationship dynamics.  Although their relationship was a failure, the Rumours album became Fleetwood Mac’s most successful album charting at Number 1 for 30+ weeks.

Solo Career –

In 1981, Nicks released a solo album while still technically a member of Fleetwood Mac. The album, Bella Donna, went number 1 on the Billboard 200 charts.

In 1990, Nicks decided to officially leave Fleetwood Mac and pursue a solo career.
