Style Icon: Stevie Nicks
Stevie took hippie to a whole new level, adding in her own witch vibes. Specific elements made Stevie stand out such as her use of layering various textiles, top hats, shawls, platform boots, and crystal jewelry. Although Stevie often tried new trends that came as the decades passed, the late 1900s were wild, she always stayed true to her style—her fashion is timeless with a twist! Let’s dig into what this witch has brewed over the years.
Famous Fabrics - Stevie can often be found wearing many layers of velvet and chiffon in her stage outfits. This look originated from her initial “uniform” created to help decrease the stage anxiety she was experiencing in the 1970s when she began touring with Fleetwood Mac. Inspired by characters from Great Expectations and A Tale of Two Cities, she created her tour wardrobe with designer Margi Kent, a gal who ended up designing most of Stevie's looks. The uniform they created came to life from a drawing by Stevie, a little stick girl in a short jacket, layered chiffon skirt, leotard, and dramatic wrap blouse with billowing sleeves—an outfit that quickly became Stevie’s signature look, even to this day!
Platform Boots and Top Hats - In addition to her staple look, Stevie also asked her designer, Kent, for “...beautiful handmade suede platform boots that are high but not bulky. And I want a top hat, which I will find out on the road myself.” The platform shoes were certainly an accessory on trend with the times, but her top hat was a new addition to the fashion scene. Adding in these accessories began blending different aesthetics, helping to define Stevie’s unique look.
A Shawl For Spinning - Early on in Stevie's career, a shawl became a key item in her stage costume. Often sporting sparkles or fringe, her shawl became one of her favorite stage props, spreading her arms wide and spinning in circles, enchanting all of her fans. Stevie has accumulated thousands of shawls over years of performing, although some of her most famous are from her Bella Donna era.
The Color Black - In recent years and tours, Stevie is found wearing all-black looks, switching it up from “the white-winged dove.” Stevie’s style evolution in many ways is poetic to how she has grown throughout her career—experiencing life to the fullest, tapping her ribbon-covered tambourine as often as she could, and learning from the crescendos and de-crescendos that music and life bring.
Stevie Style Formula:
Chiffon Fabric + Long Dress + Something Black + A Staple Accessory = A look fit for a rockin’ sorceress
Stevie’s look has created a whole new realm of fashion—one that is rooted in the flounce and crystals that come with the ethereal bohemian aesthetic and the edgy structure in her more military elements. Staying unique to her style and maintaining a mystery to her true self, Stevie inspires her fans with her touching songs and enrapturing style.
Looking back on her career and style Stevie said in an interview with British Vogue, “Everything I wear on stage now is just another iteration of that little stick girl.” A memento to stay true to the soul that lies deep within yourself, so much so, it is the marrow in your bones, and the threads in your clothes.
